If you have just graduated from med school, congratulations ! I know you are in the midst of preparing for your housemanship real soon. Medical housemenship malaysia is indeed hard and you need a lot of resilience to go through it. Here are a few survival tips that you may look out for while you are at it.
1) Stay organized
Everyone knows that carrying on housemanship can be really messy and that you would even need to juggle between so many tasks at one time. Hence it is really important for you to stay organized. One of the easiest ways for you to track down all the things that you need to do the entire day is by creating a list of your own. Before starting your day, take about 10 mins time to simply jot down all the tasks that you need to do and all the places that you need to be. Arrange it in a hierarchy from the most important to the least important, then start your day with it. Tick the things that you have completed as you go, this would allow you to stay organized and give you a sense of accomplishment that you are done with all work.
2) Ask for help
It is normal to feel overwhelmed with work during the beginning of the housemenship period. Although it may be hard, you can always ask your superiors if you need assistance. Don’t be intimidated with their positions or superiority and most importantly don’t ever feel shy to ask for help. If there is something that needs to be done urgently and that you need assistance or guidance to complete it, you can certainly seek your superior doctors or even the nurses help, sometimes they might know things even better.
3) Don’t limit yourself
Housemanship can be super exhausting since you need to always be on your feet and constantly run to get things done. However the situation is, do not limit yourself in completing only your job and not getting to know about everything else in the same area. Use this opportunity wisely to widen your horizon in gaining more knowledge and experience. If you are done with your work, look for places and revenues that need help. Eventhough that is not your job or your department at that point of time, you could actually use the chance to gain more knowledge and to sharpen your skills in the medical line.
4) Get a strong support system
Make friends with everyone at work, be friendly to the people you meet and treat them well. You spend most of your time at work so make sure that you build a strong relationship with them and treat them like your own. This will save you so much in the workplace. Going to work and being in the environment would be much more tolerable if you have great friends to mingle with. If possible try spending time with them outside of work to strengthen the bond. Even if you are not able to make friends at work that is fine, stick to your loyal set of friends you already have probably from the time of your schooling.
